In just over three weeks, the nation will wave off the England football team in a bid to become World Cup Winners.
Excitement looms, football songs are heard on the radio, flags are flying and as a nation we become united…for the group stages anyway!!. After that we spend the rest of the tournament venting our frustrations about how overpaid football players are and that we are never watching an England match again!!
For your pleasure (or mild frustration), we’ve compiled our top five horrendous England World Cup moments just to get you in the spirit!
1. Let’s go back to 1990 and the moment England despair as Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed their penalty kicks allowing Germany to progress to the finals.
2. Next, let’s recall Rob Green’s clanger in the 2010 World Cup in the match against the USA. ‘He just takes his eye off the ball’ as the mouths of the nation remain wide open and no doubt shout: ‘my nan could have saved that!’

3. For number three we look at David Beckham’s red card moment in the 1998 World Cup in France. Sent off for retaliating and kicking out at Argentina’s Diego Simeone in what has been described as a petulant act and a moment of madness.

4. Number four goes to Rooney, who sees red after engaging with Ricardo Carvalho, only to lose out, stomp on Carvalho’s calf and then push Ronaldo in the face. Who can forget the wink after the sending off?
5. Our final epic moment goes to goalkeeper Paul Robinson and Gary Neville, this time in the 2006 World Cup against Croatia. Gary Neville’s routine back pass to bobble off a loose piece of Croatian turf, causing goalkeeper Paul Robinson to mistime his clearance and the ball rolled past his legs.
