Official figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show UK manufacturing is expanding and at its fastest rate since 2008 after recording a seventh consecutive month of growth in November. With order books looking healthier than ever, ensuring your workspace can keep up with the pace is essential.
In a recent article published by the BBC, it was reported that during November, total production in the manufacturing industry was estimated to have risen by 0.4% compared with the previous months. Speaking about the sector’s continued success, Lee Hopley, Chief Economist at manufacturers’ organisation EEF, said: “UK Manufacturers were, in the main, in good shape as 2017 came to a close, with the majority of sub-sectors enjoying growth. Manufacturers’ expectations for the year ahead point to output and export growth being maintained through this year on the back of continuing support from a burgeoning global economy. This together with an ongoing commitment from government to deliver on its industrial strategy, will be crucial in helping to propel the sector forward.”

One area making a strong revival is the UK fashion textile manufacturers. A survey was undertaken by the BBC and the trade body, Make it British, revealed some interesting findings after it surveyed 90 businesses in the industry. Almost 50% said they had increased turnover in the last year, while 30% are exporting a higher volume of Made in Britain Goods.
In an interview with the BBC, Debbie Catterall, from John Spencer’s, a sixth-generation family weaving business, based in Burnley, said: “Our order book is really healthy. The number of developments that we’re doing has huge potential, so the next six months’ forecast is looking great. So much so that we’re having to put on extra shifts and recruit additional staff to fulfil that need.”
Gary Trudgett, Head of Marketing at Spaceway said: “It’s fantastic to see such strong and continuing growth within the manufacturing sector. As a result, we are receiving more enquiries from businesses who are looking to expand their workspaces in order to stay ahead of the game and become more operationally efficient.”
Spaceway is confident it can advise any company to make better use of, or improve their existing workspace to ensure it achieves maximum operational efficiency. Whether that’s by designing a racking and shelving system to streamline processes or installing a mezzanine to create much needed additional space, without the heavy costs associated with moving premises to achieve the same square footage.
Dominic O’Brien, Director at Spaceway concluded: “It’s all about careful, considerate and innovative designs which can ensure every cubic inch of space is maximised and taken full advantage of. We pride ourselves on our ability to help organisations become more efficient through the clever use of space and are delighted the manufacturing industry is in a such a buoyant position.”
