The month of May has seen great achievements for Spaceway. Specifically, at the Baker Barracks in Thorney Island, a location for 1,100 British Army soldiers and their families, residing at the barracks near Chichester, West Sussex.

Firstly, there was the completion of a 16-week project to transform the existing aircraft hangar, during which Spaceway installed a two-tier, 9,000 square foot mezzanine floor. The new mezzanine maximises all possible space in the hangar, allowing the creation of new offices on the first floor, plant space and storage on the second floor, in addition to 12 enclosed vehicle maintenance spaces on the ground floor.
The project also saw Spaceway named by construction company Keir’s as their site safety winner. Recognising a range of Spaceway’s attributes from contractors’ skill and training, through to site health, safety and housekeeping standards. To read more about this award please click here
Successful project completion, attention to detail and outstanding safety standards are what Spaceway like to consider “all in a day’s work” – however, Baker Barracks also presented a further opportunity to enhance the lives of the soldiers who live and work there. Spaceway is delighted to have been part of a charitable commitment project by Kier to refurbish the Sussex Arms welfare centre, located on-site at the barracks.
The welfare centre is the largest venue at the base, serving the 247 families who live there through the hosting of social gatherings, events, welfare presentations and briefings. Unfortunately, the Sussex Arms had fallen into disrepair and was in much need of redecoration, new flooring, improved lighting and a new kitchenette. Kier reached out to its suppliers and contractors for donations of time, materials or funding, and Spaceway were keen to help realise the vision of a fresh communal space for the soldiers and families of Baker Barracks to enjoy.

This project will be completed in the early weeks of June, where we will publish a new article containing photographs of this very rewarding project.
