2018 is a special year for Spaceway as it’s our 41st year in business. As a little retrospective, we’re taking a trip down memory lane to see what else is turning 40 this year and reminiscing about the halcyon days of 1978 when it all began.
To start you on your nostalgic trip we’re going to begin our tour with music: 1978 was certainly the year of disco rock. Acts like Blondie, Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones were all mixing up guitars with mirror ball beats. Here are a few hits from ’78 which you may think – How was that 40 years ago?
Miss you – The Rolling Stones
Heart of Glass – Blondie
Le Freak – Chic
Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? – Rod Stewart
I’m Every Woman – Chaka Khan
With disco fever taking over the nation, we can’t help to mention that it was also 40 years ago we were first introduced to the ultimate dance floor filler of Village People’s YMCA and the Bee Gees’ Staying Alive. We’ve had 40 years so I’m sure we have all perfected the dance moves by now!
Up next, we look back at the films which were gracing our cinema screens – obviously not on our home cinemas and certainly not on DVD (only released in 1999.)
• Superman (15th December)
• Grease (16th June)
• National Lampoon’s Animal House (28th July)
• Halloween (17th October)
• Jaws 2 (16th June)
• Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (3rd October)
Back in 1978, some of you may have been lucky enough to have owned a VHS tape player, remember those? If you do, it might be time to dust off those old boxes as some VHS tapes have significantly increased in value. A copy of ‘Hitchhike to Hell’ could, in fact, be worth £500 whilst ‘Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks’ can fetch £1500.
Hands up who remembers fresh-faced Katie Holmes playing Joey Potter in the American show, Dawson’s Creek who then went on to marry Tom Cruise? She is turning 40 this year, along with several other celebrities facing ‘life begins at 40’ comments or if looking at recent statistics ‘you’ve already lived half of your life’. If that’s the case, it’s no wonder that mid-life crisis now starts at 40 and not 50! Here are a few fresh faces from the past which will be celebrating the big birthday this year.
• Gavin and Stacey star – James Corden
• Music star – John Legend
• Dawson’s Creek actor – Joshua Jackson
• Former Mad Men star – January Jones
• Mean Girls actress – Rachel McAdams
1978 also saw the launch of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams on BBC Radio 4, Nottingham Forest win the Division title and May Day became an official bank holiday. The first episode of Mork and Mindy was aired on the 14th September with “Na-nu, na-nu” and the freaky hand signal being adopted by the nation.
Speaking about Spaceway’s 40 years in business, Head of Marketing, Gary Trudgett said:
