About the project
Specsavers are the leading brand for eye wear in the UK and one of the fastest growing in Europe. Expansion and reorganisation of their property portfolio meant that their use of their current office space needed a complete re think to accommodate the changes that were planned as part of their strategic business plans for the future.
Overview
Over 250 specialist IT and project Management staff were based at the Forum 6 Business Park in Whiteley, Fareham, Hampshire. The staff were spread over three floors of high specification offices albeit the office interior design and layout no longer suited the needs of the business as changes planned now required its head count to nearly double from 250 to 400 desk locations. This alongside an ever increasing demand for meeting and training room facilities meant that something radical was required to provide a solution to the space problems that were looming.
Creating a more agile working office space had formed part of the projects teams initial discussions and a deadline needed to be met. Specsavers facilities and projects team worked on a design that would provide a more agile workspace with the additional collaborative workspaces that were required to reduce demand on meeting room space. It would mean that a complete change in the way in which the office teams and individuals would work and how they would orchestrate meetings.
An agile workspace
The tender
Specsavers had worked successfully in the past with Spaceway for both industrial and factory fit out projects but only occasionally for a few smaller office interiors projects. So when Specsavers started the process of finding the ideal partner to work with Spaceway were recommended for the initial interviews. It was during this process that Spaceway involved their in house design and project management team who had recently previously carried out a similar agile workspace design and build for another of their clients.
After further interviews Spaceway reached the short list of candidates and provided a full presentation illustrating proposed designs, layouts plans and colour schemes. Specsavers worked closely with the Spaceway projects team to develop these initial concepts and finally agreed a budget and timescale. Once this development stage was completed Spaceway were then appointed as main contractor for the full design and build of the office interior project.
The Spaceway projects team devised a full works programme that involved evenings and weekend work working over three phases in different parts of the building so to provide the minimum of disruption to the day to day business activities of Specsavers. The logistics of the project were staggering as over 250 desks and accessories had to be removed and then 400 new workstations, partitions, doors, electrics and lockers were installed in two long weekends.
