About this project
The 1960’s was an exhilarating time for the UK music industry and it was in this intoxicating period that Father and Son, Harry and Peter Anderton, opened their store in Guildford to cater for the growing number of aspiring musicians.
Today its music stores and online musical instrument shop supplies an extensive range of equipment from drums to guitars, pianos and keyboards and music accessories.
As one of the fastest growing online music retailers in the UK, Andertons boasts many key achievements, having been named as one of the top 100 musical instrument retailers worldwide and recognised as one of the top 150 UK E-commerce retailers.
Customer Requirements
Having seen online sales rocket, Andertons were faced with a major need for additional storage space to service its online orders and meet customer demands and expectations. Having maximised every inch of cubic space of its existing warehouse, it was time to seek new premises which would fit the needs of this rapidly growing company.
Having worked with Spaceway in the past, it was a natural fit for the team to speak with the industrial workspace design and installation experts Spaceway to transform their new warehouse space.
Spaceway designed a total solution which included the installation of a three-tier mezzanine floor, taking the space from 30,000sq.ft to a staggering 90,000sq.ft. Carousels, conveyor belts and multi-level pallet gates were used to get large, small, heavy and light products in and out of the warehouse quickly and efficiently.
A sophisticated smart conveyor system was installed and spans all three floors of the warehouse allows for optimum operational efficiency. The operator can load the conveyor from multiple locations with stock items and then remove them at any level themselves, removing the need for a person at the top and the bottom of a traditional conveyor. In addition, it can be programmed to deliver an item to any floor and can also be used in reverse to feedback down to the ground floor.
Bespoke racking was also manufactured to fit around the conveyor system, along with pallet gates so the forklifts can lift the bulkier items between floors. The racking and shelving solutions used on this project allowed for ease of replenishing the picking lines and for multiple pallets of items to be added to the pick face.
The ground floor area comprises of the packing bay, a click & collect area for customers who order online and behind that is a storage area and bespoke workshop for the engineers.
Also, as part of the design, it was very important for the warehouse operators to have a relaxing break out area. The first floor was fitted out with a canteen and games room so the team can take a break from the warehouse floor.
The Design Solution
The End Result
Through clever design and innovative planning, Spaceway was able to triple the workspace for Andertons and have created a warehouse which is not only functional and operationally effective but provides employees with a safe and comfortable environment to work in.
Speaking about the success of this project, Frank Hillin, Project Manager at Spaceway, said:
“The key to delivering this job was in the level of detail which went into the initial stage. Having worked with Andertons for over ten years, the combination of experience on both sides allowed us to fine tune this project and provide the best end result. The harmonious partnership between Spaceway and Andertons ensured the transformation of the new warehouse space was delivered on time and to budget.”
