Gooch and Housego were running out of space fast as a result of continued growth due to the continued success of its new product ranges, meant the three existing buildings they occupied in central Ilminster were no longer able to meet their current requirements and plans for future growth.
Having secured the former Clarkes shoe factory site, and establishing a project team, the missing link was an interiors contractor who could provide design and build experience so to turn the project team’s conceptual ideas into a workable project.
Spaceway were among a number of companies that were chosen to tender for the works and were soon selected to join the project team based on their competitive pricing and a willingness to work on designs and space plans prior to the formal contract being put in place.
Spaceway's Approach
Once the plans, designs and proposed products were approved, the interior of the 100,000 sq.ft three-storey office block was stripped back to its original structure, lined out and insulated to meet building control requirements and prevent energy wastage via heat gain or loss. The offices were fitted out with stylish glazed partitioning, integral blinds, veneer doors and suspended ceilings.
Finally the offices were decorated and carpets laid using Milliken’s ‘Catalyst’ range. Open plan offices, meeting rooms, kitchens, tea points, a reception and conference areas were all fitted out using a colour scheme chosen by Gooch & Housego from the Spaceway mood board presentations.
The latest high frequency energy efficient lighting was recessed into the suspended ceilings and data cabling, compartment trunking and electrics were fitted throughout the office areas. The fitting of a smart new curved reception desk completed the look.

The Challenge
When Universal Engineering, was suddenly gazumped on a new facility they were acquiring for its Line Scan Division and had to find alternative premises, it not only necessitated a speedy response from the company in order that it could meet its contractual obligations with the MoD, but also necessitated Spaceway South redesigning and fitting out a large industrial building in just six weeks. Spaceway South completed the project in a third of the original time allocated thereby enabling the company to complete the MoD contracts on time. An existing building, the 20,000 sq. foot premises located in Lynx Trading Estate, Yeovil, have now been fitted out to provide new administrative offices, meeting rooms, store and open plan offices equipped with tea points, toilets and dark rooms.
Spaceway's Approach
To make maximum use of the area, Spaceway has installed a mezzanine floor and equipped the building with demountable Komfort office partitioning, suspended ceilings, lighting, electrics, small power, data cabling and cable management systems. The interior of the building has been extensively decorated and fitted with carpet tiles, vinyl floor coverings and equipped with Senator Jigsaw Plus workstations, seating and storage systems. To complete the project Spaceway South fitted out the stores area with high bay racking and an order-picking machine.
Spaceway South provided a complete turnkey operation, which also included consultancy on Building Regulations, Planning, and Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) requirements. In addition Universal Engineering is also using Spaceway’s Consumables Division (SAC) for the supply of warehouse, workshop and materials handling equipment.

"Spaceway South worked through the night to fit out the facility in the limited period available", said Chris Bell, Managing Director of South Dorset Engineering a division of Universal Engineering. "Without their speedy response, we would not have completed the MoD contracts on time which would have put future contracts in jeopardy. Spaceway have done a fantastic job and we are delighted with the final result".

The Challenge
Due to Winstanley Pramworld’s ongoing success it needed to relocate from it’s existing warehouse to a much larger site so as to accomodate its increased volumes of products and protect its future expansion plans.
Spaceway have had a long standing working relationship with the Winstanley family and recently fitted out a new warehouse for Winstanley Bikes and therefore were called in to look at this new project.
Spaceway's Approach
The brief was to come up with a storage solution that utilised the available space within the building and maximising the operational efficienceys. Spaceway, through regular site meetings worked with Winstanley’s came up with a design to accomodate all their requirements..
The first part of the project was the installation of a two tier mezzanine floor so as to use the height within the building, this provided an additonal 862m2 of floor space. Due to the area of the floor and in line withbuilding regulations fire protection was fitted, this included suspended ceilings and column casings to give a one hour protection to the main structure. Spaceway also designed and installed a lighting system to suit which included for emergency lights and alarm.
The final element of the works which was vital to the overall operation to move products between the floors was to install two interfloor conveyors, these were fitted with intelligent controls that enabled products to not only feed both floors but accumulate products on the conveyors so a single indivdual could operate the system.

The Challenge
Respironics needed to fit out its new 45,000 square foot distribution centre in Tangmere, Chichester to respond to customer demand and enhance the breadth of services and products offered to customers following the acquisition of Profile Therapeutics (Profile) in 2004.
Not only did the facility need to provide additional space for Respironics expanding product range and be equipped with pallet racking and a conveyor system but also needed to include functional office accommodation for its warehouse and despatch personnel.
Spaceway's Approach
Spaceway’s design team prepared CAD drawings to maximise the space available. These included the installation of a mezzanine floor to accommodate the office accommodation and versatile racking to accommodate a range of pallets.
The offices were constructed using the latest steel faced industrial partitioning and ceilings and finished with floor coverings, recessed modular light fittings and skirting trunking for telecoms and computer outlets
Spaceway decked all levels and installed a range of racking and shelving. High bay pallet racking was installed to create in excess of 2000 pallet locations and to enable Respironics to store a variety of pallet sizes. The picking area was fitted out to accommodate 2,400 locations with Longspan racking used for the slower moving products and carton live racking for faster moving lines. Existing push back racking was dismantled and then reinstalled in the new premises and mesh partitioning installed around the perimeter edge as an additional pedestrian safety feature.
An integral conveyor system was built into the design to transport the picked items to the packaging and despatch area.
